Votive Candle Holders – A Modern Home Decor Items

Have you ever thought about the difference between tealights and votive candles? Tealights are small candles which are placed inside small cup shaped containers while votive candles are somewhat different. The tealights are made from good quality wax and are placed in cup shaped containers so that they burn out completely when lit. This distinction is pretty straight forward and simple, but there is little bit of science behind all these. After all everything is incomplete without science.

Votive candles have a lower melting point as compared to tealights. The candles are placed in votive holders where the wax can totally melt and liquefy onto the surface of the holder. This ensures that the wax is fully consumed by the wick and the wax is not wasted as in normal candles. The votive candles melt directly onto the surfaces of votive holders, so the inside of the holders are tapered or bowl shaped which helps the liquid wax to flow towards the center and be drawn up by the wick of the candle, where it will burn out completely. But a votive candle holder having flat sides or corners on the inside will not help to burn the wax completely. The liquid wax in such a votive candle holder would not move towards the center and be drawn up by the wick. Thus even after the wick burns out completely, a mess of unused wax will be left over and you will have to clean up the mess.

So while buying a votive candle holder keep these aspects in mind. Also smaller candles are better than larger ones. The votive holders should not be wider than twice the diameter of the votive candles. The proper shape of the holder and its correct inside shape will ensure that lesser amount of unused wax is left over after the wick has burned out completely.

Tealights are smaller and more versatile because the wax is contained in a metal or plastic cup. You can place them in any type of holder and after the wax is consumed, no residue is left inside the holder. You can simply throw away the cup. Many candle holders are designed to hold both tealights and votives. So when you are thinking about which one to buy, remember that tealights are contained in little cups, while votives are larger and meant to burn directly onto the surface of candle holders.
